2016 Year in Review

risk taking

What sets us apart makes us stronger

When the small group of subscribers got together 30 years ago, the idea of a reciprocal was completely new, but they were committed to the concept of sharing costs and preventing losses. The pillars on which their insurance had been based were shaken and they knew they had to rethink their traditional approach.

Remarkably, even though HIROC’s focus has always been based on a diligent model that values financial stability and risk mitigation, those early subscribers were taking a risk. But, that risk was purposeful and carefully thought out. And it paid off. Leaving the confines of their previous insurers and putting their trust in HIROC enabled the maverick insurance company to grow and prosper.

What those risk takers couldn’t anticipate was the impact they would have on our Canadian healthcare landscape. At HIROC, we’ve always seen our core job as understanding our subscribers’ challenges – and developing solutions that are the right thing for the industry as a whole.

Putting our subscribers in the middle has led to our having an impact on risk, an impact on cost, and an impact on patient safety. We’ve fine-tuned that purposeful and carefully thought out approach and it continues to have an impact on creating the safest possible healthcare environment.

After 30 years, we’re still enthusiastic about turning challenges into opportunities! In 2016, we did more to mitigate risk by expanding the number of organizations using the IRM Risk Register and a group of subscribers completed the first three-four year cycle of RAC (Risk Assessment Checklists).

What continues to have an impact is reinvesting our surplus funds in the healthcare system. In 2016, we distributed a record $29 million in surplus funds.

Numbers tell the story but so do people. Our spirited and family-oriented culture, nourished by HIROC’s CEO Peter Flattery (since-retired), was recognized when we were named one of Greater Toronto’s Top Employers for 2017!

The unexpected will continue to arrive but our ability to develop resources, mobilize talent, break the mold and yes, take risks, isn’t just smart, it’s essential. Thank you for a successful 2016 and for your ongoing support, trust and commitment over 30 amazing years.
